Decatur, Indiana was founded in 1836 by Samuel Rugg. The city was named in honor of Stephen Decatur, Jr., the prominent American naval hero. It became the county seat of Adams county on May 18, 1836. The county itself was established on March 1, 1836, and named after John Quincy Adams, the 6th President of the United States. Decatur is not only the county seat but also the home to over 9,000 people.
